What is a Veterinary Nurse?
It’s worth noting that, apart from vets, only qualified and Registered (or listed) Veterinary Nurses, and students in formal training are legally permitted to treat patients. These nurses have achieved NVQ level III in Veterinary Nursing, use the letters RVN after their name, wear bottle green and white uniforms and have a distinctive VN badge on their collar. We are committed at Mill House only to employ professional nurses to care for your pets.

Penny Jackson-Smith  Cert SA Nutrition VHA RVN  NURSING MANAGER

Penny has been nursing with us since 1986, qualifying as a VN in 1987. Her further training has given her expertise in nutrition and special diets, dentistry, and early training, and she offers consultations in all these areas. She also takes Puppy Socialisation sessions and is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. Penny is responsible for our pharmacy and for organising the nursing team overall, supervising and monitoring our training programmes.

Mel Mace Cert SA Nutrition  VHA RVN

Mel joined us in 1998, qualified in 2002 and takes care of our endoscopy and orthopaedics departments, which requires a lot of skill and patience with the complex equipment.  She is also keen to build on her radiography skills.  She passed the Certificate in Small Animal Nutrition in 2005, and like Emma - achieved the highest marks in the UK that year!  She is currently studying for her Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing.

Kelly joined us in 1999 and qualified in 2005, making veterinary nursing her second career.  Kelly particularly enjoys well pet consultations and advising clients on the best health care.   Now working part time since the birth of her young son, Kelly is in charge, with Sam, of our radiography and imaging department.

Amy came to Mill House in 2009 with a couple of years experience as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in mixed practice in Suffolk.  She is keen to further develop her nursing skills with us and loves all aspects of surgical and medical nursing, as well as working as a Veterinary Healthcare Advisor directly with owners.

Libby Manning RVN

Libby joined Mill House in 2006 and qualified as a VN in 2010.   Libby takes care of our diagnostic laboratory - which involves taming a number of technically demanding machines which we rely on to make our diagnoses, particularly when we have a seriously ill patient out of hours. We frequently update our lab equipment, so Libby has her work cut out keeping everything quality controlled.  Libby will be on maternity leave from July.

Kayleigh Hardy RVN

Kayleigh also joined Mill House in 2006 and qualified in 2010.    Kayleigh and Megan keep our reception area interesting and with up to the minute information. She also helps Megan with organising our nursing shifts rota.

The qualified nursing team are assisted by 5 nurses in training and several support staff.   We are an Approved Training Practice for veterinary nurses, and our students attend block release college courses as well as receiving practical training and assessments at Mill House. It takes at least three years of hard work developing the right skills and completing an extensive portfolio of evidence as well as several written and practical exams to qualify as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN)
